Tom Seaver Has Been Diagnosed With Dementia And Will Be Retiring From Public Life
Well this fucking sucks. You can go across all of baseball and not find many players that are so clearly the best player in franchise history like Tom Terrific was to the Mets. The fact the Mets were somehow able to get Seaver after his signing with the Braves was overruled is the most bizzaro Mets luck ever. Seaver was an absolute stud for a team that was a complete joke for years until the Miracle Mets won the 1969 World Series. He won three Cy Youngs, led the NL in ERA three times and strikeouts five times while also having the highest percentage of Hall of Fame votes (98.4%) until Ken Griffey Jr. passed him almost 25 later. You know you were good if the old curmudgeon baseball writers like you that much.
For a franchise filled with lowpoints, the trading of Seaver to the Reds may be rock bottom for Mets fans (which is obviously saying something) to the point the night of the trade was named the Midnight Massacre. Any time Seaver showed up at a game or on TV, Seaver gave Mets fans a sense of pride because he was an example of greatness for an organization famous for the opposite. The cruelest part of all this, outside of Seaver being inflicted with an absolutely vicious disease, is that it’s the 50 year anniversary of Seaver’s Miracle Mets, who will be celebrated at Citi Field this year. There will clearly be a big void at any and all events with the team’s Ace no longer showing up in public, but it sounds like the Mets will be doing something to honor Seaver in some way.
All we can do is hope that the Wilpons do the right thing for once and put up a statue of The Franchise that should have been built years ago for being by FAR the greatest player ever to play for this god forsaken franchise.
